Ixtapa Zihuatanejo

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo: two distinctly different neighboring places on the Mexican Pacific.

Zihuatanejo, a fishing port for centuries, embraced by Zihuatanejo Bay, retains its old-Mexico charm. Just 10 minutes (6 kilometers/3.7 miles) up the coast, Ixtapa is a modern world-class resort. Together they comprise one tropical destination that is indeed twice as pleasing.

Zihuatanejo hotels are smaller. They range from economy (in town, near or on beaches) to grand luxury properties situated on La Ropa Beach or overlooking the Bay.

Most Ixtapa hotels are located in the Hotel Zone along Palmar Beach (just across the avenue from the village-like shopping "plazas"). However one major hotel is nearby on its own cove and three others are just up the coast at Playa Linda.

With a total of only 6004 hotel rooms, Ixtapa- Zihuatanejo remains a comfortably small destination. It is relatively upscale, compared to larger destinations, because most of the major hotels are beachfront resort- quality properties.

Urban development resort of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is initiated with financing in the year of 1972 which was obtained from the World Bank. Officially, the urban development works, equipment and head works were launched in 1974. In 1976, was built the international airport located only 10 minutes from the city by the National Highway Zihuatanejo-Acapulco, and Ixtapa, the magnificent Royal Palm golf course with 18 holes designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.

Ixtapa development through tourism projects, real estate, it has become one of the major beach destinations preferred by domestic visitors with an
important offer of accommodation second home, so it maintains a significant captive market, but not only but also in Ixtapa in Zihuatanejo.

Location

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is located in the northwestern region of the State of Guerrero. (Acapulco and colonial Taxco are also in Guerrero.)

This coastline runs diagonally, not north-south.

Acapulco is 225 kilometers/ 140 miles "down the coast" (to the southeast); Puerto Vallarta 663 kilometers/412 miles up the coast (northwest), and they are all connected by the coastal Federal Highway 200. This expanse of tropical Pacific coastline is referred to as the "Mexican Riviera".

The segment of coastline between Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Acapulco is known as "La Costa Grande".

Set against the green backdrop of the sheltering Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains, the greater Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo area runs along some17 miles of scenic coastline with sandy beaches, quiet lagoons, scalloped coves, rocky bluffs and offshore islets.

Beaches

El Palmar. This is the main beach in Ixtapa, a wide expanse of sand that measures 2.37 kilometers (1.5 miles). It is known as the "hotel zone" since it is most major hotels beachfront. This beach faces the open sea and looks like a crescent moon is excellent for surfing at the point called "Las Escolleras", while at its southern end (towards Zihuatanejo), where the bank is protected by huge boulders and a high hill, the waters are calm. Thanks to the Master Plan Ixtapa, there are large green areas in hotels. Each has its strip of beach umbrellas covered spaces for serving food and beverages. You can also enjoy beach activities, watersports and, of course, watch the sunset over the Pacific. The landscape here is defined by its
islands called Los Morros which are the distinctive signature of Ixtapa.
